Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri, a former senior official at Mitiga Prison in Libya, was arrested in Germany on 16 July 2025, following an urgent arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

El Hishri is accused of committing horrific crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, torture, and sexual violence, between 2015 and 2020.

The arrest follows intense international coordination and highlights a critical step in the pursuit of justice for Libyan victims. El Hishri remains in German custody pending further proceedings.

HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT HISHRI

He allegedly oversaw or directly participated in acts of murder, torture, rape, and sexual violence against detainees.
Mitiga Prison, where he held a high-ranking role, is notorious for systematic abuse, including brutal interrogations and denial of basic hygiene.
His arrest was made possible through cooperation between German authorities and the ICC, and he is currently in custody awaiting transfer to The Hague for trial.
The ICC’s investigation into Libya began in 2011 following a UN Security Council resolution, and El Hishri’s case is part of a broader effort to hold Libyan officials accountable for wartime atrocities.
This arrest could mark a pivotal moment in international justice efforts related to Libya’s civil conflict.
